Until India became a major force in the diamond cutting and polishing business, such small diamonds were not cost effective to cut. Instead they were used in industry. More than 800 thousand Indian cutters, working for low wages, cut all sized diamond but have become especially skilled at cutting small stones, creating a flood of tiny diamonds in the market place.
